Occupational therapy (OT) is the use of assessment and intervention to develop, recover, or maintain the meaningful activities, or occupations, of individuals. These are the activities we do every day and also those that help us create a meaningful life, live independently, and engage with community and culture. Occupational Therapist working with children often support children in the following meaningful activities:
Self-care tasks: Daily tasks such as dressing, bathing, grooming, mealtimes, and eating.
Play: Encouraging an interest in social or individual play. Learning to advocate for ones own needs and listen to others in a social setting.
Emotional Regulation: Understanding and developing functional tools to support individual emotional regulation needs.
Fine motor: Strength and control in the hands, coordination when using both hands together, and efficiency and fluency in small movements.
Gross motor: Large movements, hand-eye coordination, and balance.
Executive function skills: Planning, organisation, and time management.
Strive is dedicated to neurodiversity affirming practices.
Neurodiversity (Neuro) Affirming Therapy: is a way of delivering therapy that affirms and supports neurodivergent differences, rather than viewing these as deficits that should be 'cured.
Evidence suggests that working in this way; children build an increased sense of self worth, confidence and an ability to advocate for their needs in different environments. Children learn what supports they need for functional skills, whilst building skills to advocate for these needs.
